Lebensrückblick (please scroll down ↓)
On the 13th of March 1967 I was born in Bonn, the capital of West Germany at the time. Opposite to a small group of seven scenic mountains called “Siebengebirge”, along the river Rhine, I grew up with my parents and a six years older brother in a small village, surrounded by a pretty nice outdoors environment.
At the age of ten I attended High School in the South of Bonn. After nine horribly long years, I graduated with Abitur (A-levels equivalent) at the age of 19.
After that I longed for doing something creative and functional, so I started an apprenticeship to become a toolmaker, a classic metal trade, trained in an industrial factory for extruded aluminium sheaths in Bonn. In 1990 I completed this training after 3 ½ years and I worked there for a further ½ year.
Instead of compulsory military service, I did a social community service: For about 1 ½ years I worked in a youth club for kids and teenagers. My job was to be responsible as caretaker and as supervisor to help children with their homework for school, to lead some afternoon courses like working with wood or clay and to be group leader in a number of holiday camps for children and older teenagers.
From 1992 to the following years I studied Biology with the subsidiary subject Physics at the Universities of Bonn, Cologne and Saarbrücken.
Bonn means so many memories to me. Not only High School and University. Actually, being born here, having a crush on my playfellow in the kindergarten, 15 years later the first kiss, moving out of the parent's house to our first own flat, visiting heaps of Open-Air-For-Free-Rock-concerts and these gigantic flee markets along the Rheinaue wetlands, the mass demonstrations against SS20- and Pershing-2 nuclear weapons in the 1980ies, re-discovering 70ies Rock cult parties and joining the first own band, - it all happened here.
In February and March of 1995, I was on holiday in New Zealand for about nine weeks. Together with a friend, we went out on a bicycle tour over more than 2000 km, mostly along the West coast of the South Island and the East- and North coast of the North Island. So I became familiar with the most beautiful other end of the world.
I finished my studies in the specialization of Technical Biology and Bionics – a combination of Biology and Mechanics. For my degree thesis I manufactured a by myself CAD-constructed technical demonstration model of the wing joint region of a dragonfly.
After I was graduated as biologist, I moved to Bremen in North Germany in 1999.
I wanted to live in the nice small freestanding house with beautiful leafy surroundings, close to a river, which was built by my grandfather in the late 1950s.
My first job in Bremen was to install engines in Mercedes cars as a factory mechanic. After ½ year I changed and worked for 3 years as a research assistant fellow in the University of Bremen. This was in the field of mechanical engineering in the LFM Laboratory for Precision Machining. My task was to work on research projects of ultra-precision machining of non-iron metals with diamond tools. This employment was interesting and I learned a lot. However I could not imagine to live for it and to work there for the rest of my life and it was not my original field of expertise. So I was searching for a new meaning of life. This was the time I found a web site about a helicopter training in New Zealand. I’ve always been interested in nature and technology - so what could be more consequent than to fly helicopters in New Zealand?!
In the meantime I’ve started my own business: I worked as a professional in proofreading scientific texts, I helped people to formulate all kinds of written things and I liked to do translations from written English to an appropriate and faultless German and vice versa.
During the necessary time of preparation before the immigration to “Down Under”, I started an ambitious running training: In September 2004 I had my marathon debut in Berlin, followed by Bonn and Rostock in 2005. I also participated on a first triathlon competition in June 2005 with swimming in the Rhine. Actually I started to do so many sports activities because I knew, I had to be healthy and not too heavy as well, if I wanted to fly helicopters.
Together with my partner, we immigrated to New Zealand in August 2005.
While I did the flight training in Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty / North Island, my following marathon runs were Auckland (2006), Sydney (2007), Auckland (2007), Dunedin (2008), Christchurch (2008), again Dunedin (2009) and finally Bremen (2010).
In August 2008, we moved to a wonderful own house in Dunedin, at the East coast of the South Island.
Amongst a few other jobs in different technical areas, my last profession in NZ was working for a company, which is run by friends and specialized on aerial photography of large farms and worthy lifestyle blocks on the South Island.
After five years in New Zealand, I have been living in Bremen again, since June 2010. My mission there was the energy retrofitting of the old grandfather’s house. The project was completed in 2013.
Amongst other jobs, I am currently studying "English-Speaking Cultures / Englisch" at Bremen University.
Am 13. März 1967 wurde ich in der damaligen Bundeshauptstadt Bonn am Rhein geboren. Zusammen mit meinem sechs Jahre älteren Bruder und meinen Eltern wuchs ich gegenüber des malerischen Siebengebirges auf - in einem kleinen Dorf, von wunderschöner Natur umgebenen.
Im Alter von zehn kam ich auf ein Gymnasium im Süden von Bonn. Nach neun als entsetzlich lang empfundenen Jahren machte ich das Abitur mit 19.
Ich sehnte mich nach etwas Praktischem und begann eine Ausbildung im klassischen Metallberuf des Werkzeugmachers in einem großen, aluminiumverarbeitenden Industriebetrieb in Bonn-Nord. Nach 3 ½ Jahren erfolgte die Abschlussprüfung und ich arbeitete für ein weiteres halbes Jahr als Werkzeugmacher in der Fertigung von Spezialwerkzeugen für die Produktion von Strangpressprofilen in dieser Fabrik.
Meinen Zivildienst leistete ich 1 ½ Jahre lang in einem Jugendfreizeithaus für Kinder und Jugendliche. Einerseits war ich als Hausmeister tätig, andererseits in der Hausaufgabenhilfe für Kinder sowie als Leiter von Nachmittagskursen im Werken mit Ton und Holz. Darüber hinaus leitete ich verschiedene Ferienfreizeitfahrten mit Kindern und Jugendlichen.
Von 1992 an studierte ich Diplom-Biologie mit dem Nebenfach Physik an den Universitäten Bonn, Köln und Saarbrücken.
Mit Bonn verbinde ich etliche, besonders prägende Erinnerungen. Nicht nur Gymnasium und Hochschule. Es ist meine Geburts- und Heimatstadt. Zum esten mal verknallt (in meinen Freund im Kindergarten), 15 Jahre später der erste Kuss und die erste Freundin, der Auszug aus meinem Elternhaus in unsere erste eigene Wohnung, etliche Umsonst-und-Draußen-Konzerte und Riesenflohmärkte in den Rheinauen, die Großdemonstrationen gegen SS20- und Pershing-2-Atomraketen in den 1980ern, 70er-Rock-Diskotheken und –Partys und meine erste, eigene Band – alles dies ereignete sich hier.
Im Februar und März 1995 machte ich, zusammen mit einem Freund, einen mehr als neunwöchigen Fahrradurlaub in Neuseeland. Überwiegend entlang der Westküste der Südinsel sowie der Nordostküste der Nordinsel, legten wir – ursprünglich völlig untrainiert – mehr als 2.000 km zurück. Auf diese Weise wurde ich zum ersten mal vertraut mit dem “schönsten Ende der Welt”.
Ich beendete mein Studium im Schwerpunkt Technische Biologie und Bionik – eine Fächer-Kombination aus Biologie und Technik. Für meine Diplomarbeit designte und baute ich ein technisches Demonstrationsmodell des Flügelgelenks einer Großlibelle.
Nach dem Abschluss der Diplomarbeit zog ich 1999 nach Bremen.
Ich wollte im hübschen, freistehenden Einfamilienhaus mit großem Garten im Grünen wohnen, das mein Opa Ende der 1950er Jahre in der Nähe eines Flusses in Bremen-Nord gebaut hatte.
In meinem ersten Job in Bremen baute ich als Industriemechaniker im DaimlerChrysler-Werk Motoren in nagelneue Mercedes-Wagen ein. Nach ½ Jahr wechselte ich an die Universität Bremen und begann eine dreijährige Tätigkeit als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter für den Fachbereich Produktionstechnik im Labor für Mikrozerspanung. Ich bearbeitete Forschungsprojekte der ultrapräzisen, zerspanenden Bearbeitung von Nichteisenmetallen unter Einsatz von Diamantwerkzeugen. Diese Arbeit war interessant und ich lernte sehr viel. Dennoch konnte ich mir nicht vorstellen, mich ausschließlich in diesem Bereich zu spezialisieren und suchte nach einer neuen Bedeutung für mein Leben. Zu dieser Zeit stieß ich auf eine Internetseite über ein Hubschraubertraining in Neuseeland. Ich war schon immer sowohl an Natur als auch an Technik interessiert – was war also naheliegender, als in Neuseeland Hubschrauber zu fliegen?!
Inzwischen startete ich auch meine eigene Selbstständigkeit im Bereich des Korrekturlesens von wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten. Ich half beim Formulieren von Texten aller Art und begann ebenfalls mit Übersetzungen von geschriebenem Englisch in fehlerfreies Deutsch und umgekehrt.
Während der erforderlichen Vorbereitungszeit für das Auswandern nach “Down Under” begann ich auch ein ambitioniertes Lauftraining. Im September 2004 erlebte ich in Berlin mein Marathon-Debüt, gefolgt von weiteren Läufen in dieser Distanz in Bonn und Rostock in 2005. Im Juni desselben Jahres nahm ich auch an meinem ersten Triathlon-Wettkampf mit Schwimmen im Rhein teil. Ursprünglich hatte ich mit diesen intensiven, sportlichen Aktivitäten begonnen, weil mir bewusst war, dass ich gesund und auch möglichst leicht sein musste, wollte ich Hubschrauber fliegen.
Im August 2005 wanderte ich, zusammen mit meiner Lebensgefährtin, in Neuseeland ein.
Während ich die Flugausbildung in Tauranga in der Bay of Plenty auf der Nordinsel begann, lief ich einen weitere Marathonläufe in Auckland (2006), gefolgt von Sydney (2007), Auckland (2007), Dunedin (2008), Christchurch (2008), wieder Dunedin (2009) und schließlich Bremen (2010).
Im August 2008 zogen wir in ein eigenes, wundervolles Haus in Dunedin an der Ostküste der Südinsel.
Neben einigen anderen Jobs in verschiedenen technischen Bereichen arbeitete ich in meiner letzten beruflichen Tätigkeit in Neuseeland in einem von Freunden geleiteten Unternehmen, das sich auf Luftbildaufnahmen von großen Farmen und Millionärsvillen auf der gesamten Südinsel spezialisiert hat.
Nach insgesamt sechs Jahren in Neuseeland lebe ich seit Juni 2010 wieder in Bremen. Meine Mission war die wärmedämmende Isolierung und Kernsanierung des alten Hauses der früheren Großeltern. Das Riesenprojekt wurde 2013 vollendet.
Neben anderen Jobs studiere ich gegenwärtig "English-Speaking Cultures / Englisch" an der Universität Bremen.
